I never heard of them putting a tie knot on it. when I get them done they either use nail glue @ the ends, but they have to be professionals to do this or they will glue your hair together..another way is to use Pump It Up hair spritz, it will make your hair hard and it will be easier to take down then if u use the glue

they are really tiny clear rubber bands(i use the kind made by Goody). they are like the kind u use for braces
